Increase driver awareness at your school of the "Move Over Law" in the state of Ohio.
The Move Over Law is a lifesaving law in the state of Ohio that requires drivers to move over and slow down for any stationary vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road.
The law applies to vehicles with flashing lights of any color, including law enforcement officers, emergency responders, road construction, maintenance vehicles, utility crews, disabled vehicles and tow trucks.
The law applies to all roadways and highways in the state, and fines are doubled for failing to comply with it.
By moving over and slowing down, Ohio drivers dramatically reduce the risk of harmful and even fatal crashes with stationary vehicles and people alongside the roadways.
Remember to always Move Over, Slow Down and Pay Attention for every flashing light, every time. It just may save a life.
To Complete this Activity:
- Visit the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) at https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/about-us/resources/move-over.
- Choose an activity that will make students aware of the "Move Over Law".
- Some examples are posters, announcements, video, report, demonstration, interview or guest speaker from ODOT or emergency responders.
- Take photos of students engaging with your activity and share them on social media of your peers, your school and community organizations.
- Complete the activity as described above.
- Take photos/video of students participating in the activity.
- Click "Submit Points."
- Fill out the online submission COMPLETELY
- Enter the name and email of the submitter
- Upload your photos/video and a brief description of the activity (including the date of completion and any people pictured in the photo).
- Multiple individual classroom presentations or school assemblies will only be approved as one submission
- Schools must take new photos with and submit these pictures to earn points again for the current year.
- Points for all award levels will be counted instantaneously, but the Silver Award will not be granted until a participating school has earned the Bronze Award!
